George Holloms Fotheringham

George Holloms Fotheringham was born 10 October 1878 at Rock Island, Rock Island, IL. He died 02 April 1955 at Academy, Charles Mix, SD. Find A Grave Memorial# 70465644

On 14 June 1904, he married Elsie Ruth Veale. She was born 23 March 1882 in Holt County, NE and died 20 February 1920 in Charles Mix County, SD as a result of an influenza epidemic. Find A Grave Memorial# 70465645. Elsie was the daughter of William Veale and Ann Sylvestor, who were born in England. Elsie was the 11th of 12 children.

George & Elsie are buried in La Roche Cemetery, Charles Mix County, SD.

FAMILY STORY

The Veale History gives Elsie's birthplace. According to that account, she moved with her family to DeWitt, AR about 1894, where she attended high school, then taught for three years. She then accepted a teaching job at Buck Grove, IA, where she met George Fotheringham.

Additional details from the Platte 75th Anniversary book reveal that George moved to a farm near Academy, SD, while Elsie remained in Buck Grove to finish the teaching term. She then entrained to Platte, SD, arriving on 14 June 1904. George took his horse and wagon, met her at the train, then drove her to their marriage ceremony performed by Rev. Green that same day.

Later, they moved to a farm near Ward Academy so that their children could be educated. Jack & Elsie Fotheringham moved nearby and Jack helped with the farming, which was all done with horses.

After Elsie's death, Agnes Fotheringham, who had been widowed for about 3 years, moved into George's family home and helped to raise the children.
