Gus and Angie were farming near Hamill, Tripp, SD, at the time of his registration for the WW1 draft in 1918.  His card describes him as medium height, stout build, with blue eyes and brown hair.  By the time of the 1920 & 1930 Censuses, He was farming near Fairfax, Gregory, SD.  Oral history indicates that Angie was legally blind. By the 1930s, money was tight for the family, but it was said that Gus had the habit of spending any spare money on chewing tobacco.  One day, he visited his sister-in-law, Minnie.  During the conversation, he said that he had no more money and hinted that perhaps Minnie could lend him some.  Minnie had no cash on hand and told him that.  Gus apparently made the rounds of other neighbors and received the same answer.  That night, he went home, had one last meal with his family, then went out to the barn and hanged himself.  His plan was that the community would then step up and care for his family, which they did.
He committed suicide in an area dubbed 'death valley' by some of the locals, because so many people died mysteriously in that area.
