Obituary for Sylvia Ruth Fotheringham Bailey: Hickey Funeral Chapel online obituary: Sylvia Ruth Bailey, (March 22, 1919 - June 2, 2012 Funeral services for Sylvia Ruth Bailey, 93, of Chamberlain will be 10:00 am Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain, SD. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Hickey Funeral Chapel. Ruth Bailey was born Saturday, March 22, 1919 in Academy, South Dakota to George Holloms Fotheringham and Elsie Ruth Veale. Sylvia’s mother passed away when she was eleven months old. Her Scottish immigrant grandmother, Agnes Fotheringham, moved onto the family farm and raised Sylvia and her older sisters and brothers. When Sylvia was 12 years old, her grandmother passed away and she began to move from one older sister to another. She attended Platte High School in Platte, South Dakota. In her late teens, she moved to Chamberlain and began working as a housekeeper and waitress. There she met and married Givens Bailey on August 29, 1939. They lived on a farm north of Chamberlain all their married lives and raised their four children: Robert, Ralph, Roger and Elaine. After 25 years of marriage, Givens passed away on August 28, 1965. She then moved to town and worked as a clerk and later as a nurse’s aide at the hospital. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the Westpoint Club. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. Sylvia passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Sanford MidDakota Care Center in Chamberlain, having attained the age of 93 years, 2 months and 8 days. Sylvia’s memory will be cherished by her three sons: Robert (Donna) Bailey of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Ralph (Conleth) Bailey of Chamberlain, and Roger (Mary) Bailey of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren: Lorrie Bailey, Raymond (Jaquelyn) Bailey, Rebecca (Thomas) Ogilvie, Ronald (Neha) Bailey, Christopher (Susan) Bailey, Angela (Gilles) Malezieux, Nancy Ruth Bailey, Holly (Samuel) Peart, Reason (Karen) Mines and Adrian (Mary) Mines; 14 great-grandchildren; and her 102-year-old sister, Catherine Shrake of Mitchell. In addition to her parents, George and Elsie Fotheringham, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Givens Bailey; her daughter, Elaine (James) Bailey; granddaughter Ronna Terrell Bailey; three brothers: Frank (Ernestine) Fotheringham, Ronald (Winifred) Fotheringham, and John Fotheringham in infancy; and three sisters: Agnes (Floyd) Johnson, Emily (Adolph) Johnson, and Amber (Jonas) Paulson. |
