obituary from www.mountfuneralhome.com for Marie Varney. Marie (Turgeon) Varney, 87, of Platte, SD passed away Friday, January 16, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in Corsica, SD. Funeral Mass is 10:30 A.M. Thursday, January 22, 2015 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Platte. A Committal Service will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. DeElda Marie Turgeon was born April 1, 1927 in Platte, SD to Joseph and Nannie (Erickson) Turgeon. She was raised on the Turgeon farm along the Missouri River just south of the current Platte-Winner Bridge along with an older sister, Alvena. She attended grades 1-8 at a country school near Snake Creek and graduated from Platte High School in 1944. Upon graduation from high school she taught at a rural country school west of Platte for two years. Marie worked at a number of places in Platte, including Siddon’s Hardware. She was married to Frank Sudrla in 1953. The fifties were also a time Marie was involved in the Five Mile softball and bowling teams, competing in both activities for several years. She then completed Dental Hygiene training in Mitchell and was employed for a number of years at the dental office of Dr. Eldon Deadrick as a dental hygienist. In 1966, Marie married Edward Varney and they were in the bee and honey business until 2005 when they started selling down the business. Marie and Ed resided in Platte during all this time where they also raised and showed quarter horses throughout the Midwest. They had two horses that earned many trophies and grand champion awards from the American Quarter Horse Association. One horse, Two-eyed Hill, was named the AQHA horse of the year in 1975. Ed and Marie both loved cats and dogs in addition to their horses. Their pets were "family". Marie took in any cat that seemed to need a home. In their later years Marie and Ed enjoyed just driving around the countryside, shopping at second hand stores and eating out. Marie was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. When their health deteriorated, Ed and Marie moved into the Good Samaritan Society Home in Corsica in November of 2013. Ed passed away one week later. Marie continued to reside at the GSS Home dealing with advancing dementia until the time of her death. Grateful for having shared in Marie’s life: two nephews: Ronald Catlin and wife, Marrietta of Pierre, SD and David Catlin and wife, Linda of Westlake Village, CA; four grand nephews: Mark Catlin (Cynthia) of Rogers, AR, Jay Catlin (Michelle) of Valentia, CA, Stephen Catlin of Dumfries, VA and Joel Catlin (Kristi) of Pierre, SD; 10 great-grand nephews and nieces: Zachary, Tyler, Stephanie, Olivia, Addison, Madeline, Dean, Ruby, Trinity and Adam; along with numerous special friends in the Platte area.
