In 1930, Julius was still living with his parents on the farm near Fairfax, SD.  By 1940, he had moved his young family to Poulsbo, Kitsap, WA, where he worked as a longshoreman at a lumber mill.  He was working for the local power company at the time of his death, and was killed while repairing a high capacity power line during a storm near Port Townsend, WA.  His in-laws, Albert & Maebelle Spurling, had also moved to Kitsap county by 1940, where they were farming in the Poulsbo precinct.  So, Fern apparently did have some family available to support her after his death.
