Alphonse Scherlin, son of Nels Scherlin and Augusta Johnson. He was born April 28, 1894 in Waterloo, Douglas, NE.  He died Oct 1977 in Polk County IA. Buried Highland Memory Gardens, Des Moines, Polk, IA. (Find A Grave Memorial# 84340327)

After his father's death, Augusta married Frank Petterson Tishendorf. Augusta died in 1899, and Frank remarried in 1900, to Anna Nordquist. Frank and Anna raised him and his surviving half-brother, Elmer.

At about 16 years of age, he went to live with Frank's half-brother, Gustav Lindgren, where he worked on the farm.

At age 23, when he registered for the WW I draft, he was working as farm labor for James Brice of rural Bloomfield, Knox, NE.  His draft card describes him as medium in build & height, with blue eyes and brown hair.  The draft card is dated 5 June 1917.  I suspect that his employer was actually James Bryce, his future father-in-law.

On 12 Nov 1925, at Fremont, Dodge, NE, he married Jennie Lind Bryce  (b: 01 Dec. 1892 in Garfield Co., NE, d: 15 Aug 1964 in De Moines,Polk, IA, buried in Highland Memory Gardens, Des Moines, Polk, IA.  Find A Grave Memorial# 150209498) daughter of James A. Bryce and Etta H. Masters. Alphonse and Jennie are listed as living with the James Bryce family in the 1930 US Census for Herrick Township, Knox County, NE.  They had 2 children at the time of the 1940 US Census, and were living at that time in Safe Township, Polk County, IA where he drove a bakery delivery truck.
